I guess it's high time i updated my blog.
The reason why i have been mia-ing on msn and on my blog is because i have been having an attachment at sgh. Luckily i only applied for 2 weeks because overall, although the experience has been an eye-opener and i have learnt a number of things, it kinda gets boring after a while when i cant do anything to help but be a pest to the docs. Not to mention tiring! cos i wake up at 630 or earlier everyday and stand all day in heels, i end up sleeping at 11, which is really early for me.
Was attached to the gastro team of the general surgery department, and yepp, i saw quite a number of surgeries: hernia repair, key hole surg, gall bladder removal, knee replacement (that was just a random surg when i was hoping around OTs finding interesting surg to see). The most exciting one was probably the colectomy(removing the colon cos of cancer) my doc had to do. Because basically we could see EVERYTHING inside the abdomen: stomach, bowels, liver, spleen, diaphragm with the heart thumping away, and even the ureter!!! and he was really nice to point out the anatomy while he was operating. Seeing the real thing definitely beats seeing the cadevars hands down.
But then again, i finally see what actually goes on during the surgery. Sometimes it's like a guessing game, testing the doc's knowledge of the anatomy when finding certain organs and arteries and the anatomy differs a little from what we learn from books. And then there is the thing about being somewhat of a guinea pig. There is the equipment version of drug reps: these reps will teach the doc during the op on how to use the euipment eg. a mesh because it is the doc's first time using it. Then they fill in the evaluation form about the product. And i think this is the norm.
2 weeks of medical stuff and now it's back to play time and going out! yeah (:
